' Child marriage prevention may result in the lack of votes'- this was the viewpoint of a Gram Panchayat representative from the Block of Basanti. This viewpoint had created tension in the minds of other Gram Panchayat representatives in the wake of the Swayangsiddha campaign aimed at stopping human trafficking and child marriage. At this juncture, the Sabhapati and Nari O Shishu Kormadokkhyo of Basanti Block held up the question, why was the Kanyashree scheme announced by the Government in the first place? They further exclaimed,' The Panchayat members are mistaken if they look at development only in terms of proper roads and safe drinking water. Because the Children are the future.' The Sabhapati told the PRI Members that the traffickers in the Block of Basanti are extremely active. The Administration and Police are doing their work with complete responsibility. It is the social duty of the representatives to plan and create awareness among the masses on human trafficking and the ill effects of child marriage. As the local administration, every Panchayat has to be committed towards making their zone child marriage and child labour free.
