If I don’t agree to marry, can my parents force me to do so?

Madhuri (name changed), a Class 10 student of MSS Nari Shikshayatan school at Purandarpur in Baruipur block, agreed to marry the groom chosen for her by her parents last November. Her friends in the Swayangsiddha group at her school were surprised on hearing about it. They failed to understand why she agreed to the proposal, especially because the ill-effects of child marriage were discussed in great detail during the Swayangsiddha awareness camp at their school in July. They could not figure out what prompted her to take the decision. Their school headmistress called Madhuri. She told her once again about the various problems that she might encounter in life if she agreed to such a marriage. But she was wary about Madhuri’s response and decided to talk to her family. Soon after, Madhuri returned and told her that she would not agree to the marriage proposal. She also told the headmistress, “Can my parents force me to marry if I don’t agree? I will make them understand myself.” Madhuri’s understanding and courage are shining examples for all students in her school since then.
